Buying a smartphone? Here are some thinngs to consider to pick out a smart phone

There are a lot of articles on the web that compare smartphones (Blackberry, iPhone and Android). Really, it's simple. Android is cool technology that puts a mobile computer in the palm of your hand. If that doesn't appeal to you, get an iPhone. iPhone is a sexy phone for people who are not really interested in getting the most out of their hand-held computers. The Blackberry and Palm (HP) Pre were great in their time and they might catch up again in the future.

Depending on how computer savvy you are, you may want a more hands-on approach to managing your shirt pocket computer. Modern operating systems try to simplify the users experience in order to maximize its potential market. If you are not content with a dumb down environment, Android allows you to take more charge of your system.

•  Screen Size, Type
Bigger devices are nice but if it's too big, it might not fit in your pocket. The quality of the display is mainly determined by the number of pixels and the type. More pixels means a sharper screen. AMOLED is the current display technology which takes least power and produces clear images with vivid colors.

•  Enhanced or plain Android
Since Anroid is always being improved, make sure your phone has the latest version of Android at the time you purchase it. You should realize that the basic Android operating system is common to all manufacturers but the major manufcturers also add proprietary enhancements. Examplles of enhancements are Sense UI from HTC. When a new version of Android is realeased from Google, you won't get it until the phone manufacturer has upgraded their add-ons and distributed to your service provider for downloading by their customers.

•  Keyboard - hard or soft
It takes a little more getting used to using your phone without a physical keyboard. You have to tap in a text entry field in order to display the on-screen keyboard.
The main reason not to have a keyboard is additional size and weight of your device.
The main reason to get a phone with a keyboard is that it doesn't take up space on the screen when you want to use it. A lot of people also like the tactile feedback when you physically press a key.
