Gestures, menus and basic navigation
- Touch, Tap
- The general way to select items on the screen, such as application and settings icons. Tap to type letters and symbols using the onscreen keyboard, or to press onscreen buttons.
-
Long Press, Touch & hold
-
Hold an item on the screen by touching it and not lifting
your finger until an action occurs. For example, to open a menu for customizing the
Home screen, you touch an empty area on the Home screen until the menu opens.
Drag Touch & hold an item for a moment and then, without lifting your finger, move
your finger on the screen until you reach the target position. You drag items on the
Home screen to reposition them
-
Swipe, slide
-
To swipe or slide, you quickly move your finger across the surface
of the screen, without pausing when you first touch it (so you don’t drag an item
instead). For example, you slide the screen up or down to scroll a list.
When viewing pictures in an album, you swipe across the screen to go to the next picture.
-
Pinch together, Pinch apart
-
Pinch In some applications (such as Maps, Browser, and Gallery), you can zoom in
and out by placing two fingers on the screen at once and pinching them together (to
zoom out) or spreading them apart (to zoom in).
-
Double-tap
-
Tap quickly twice on a webpage, map, or other screen to zoom. For
example, you double-tap a section of a webpage in Browser to zoom that section to fit
the width of the screen. You can also double-tap to control the Camera zoom, in Maps,
and in other applications. Double-tapping after pinching to zoom in some applications,
such as Browser, reflows a column of text to fit the width of the screen.
Apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
A long press on an empty space brings up the following menu, By tapping one of the items in the menu, you can add a new tool in that space on your desktop.
-
Programs
-
Programs are the most basic items to add. When you put a program icon on your desktop, you tap the icon to open the program. Programs normally take up the whole screen but may also keep running even if you go back to the home screen or start up another program. For example, when you make a phone call or start your music player, you can start another program which will take over the screen but not stop the music or phone call. Program icons don't change.
-
widgets
-
Widgets may look and work like program icons with the exception that they do not stay the same.
A common widget is a clock or the local weather. A battery widget would change to show you how much power is currently left in the battery. Some widgets don't change but you need to give them some initial information. For example with a picture widget, you might have to select the frame style and the picture to be displayed.
-
shortcuts
-
A Shortcut is like a program icon except that you specifiy a particular action for the program to do when it starts. A typical shortcut would be a particular playlist to to paly when the prams starts up.
-
folders
-
Folders are handy places to put program icons in groups where you can easily find them. Tap the folder icon to open the folder. Tap anywhere on the folder name to close the folder. I have a folder for games. To start a game, I open the Games folder and tap the icon to start the game. You can only put program icons in folders, no widgets or other folders.
